Graduate Medical Education Policy And Procedure
Concerning Observerships and Volunteer Positions at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas

PURPOSE To define the policy for observerships and volunteer positions requested on the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas (THD) campus.
SCOPE    Applies to all individuals requesting observership or volunteer opportunities.
PROVISIONS

Volunteer opportunities do not exist within any Graduate Medical Education (GME) program sponsored by THD.

Observerships are offered only to individuals who have applied to one of THD's sponsored teaching programs and have been granted an interview. Once an applicant has been invited to interview with THD, the applicant may request the opportunity to observe.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a graduate of a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or a Foreign Medical School of equivalent status.

The individual will be required to complete an application form and may be asked to provide additional documents. The GME office will process the application for approval by the Program Director, supervising faculty and Graduate Medical Education Committee. The observership must be mutually acceptable to the Program Director and the applicant.

Observers are unable to touch patients. Observers will not be granted access to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Patient consent must be granted before oberver may enter patient room.
